According to ancient Vedic teachings, the Gunas are the three fundamental forces of the Universe, embodying the eternal cycle of creation, preservation, and destruction—an ongoing process of continuous creation and transformation. They are archetypal principles that operate through nature, the collective consciousness, and our personal lives, psyche, cosmic role, and creative expression.
These universal forces are symbolized through the archetypes of Brahma as the creator, Vishnu as the preserver and sustainer, and Shiva as the transformer and destroyer—clearing space for the new to emerge. It is important to understand that destruction, in this context, is not viewed as negative, but as a necessary process of evolution. Through endings, dissolution, and release, space is created for new beginnings.
Nature constantly reminds us that the forces of creation operate in cycles. The change of seasons, the rhythms of growth and withdrawal in nature, the phases of the Moon, and even our personal life processes—all reflect these cosmic cycles. There is a phase of initial creation and birth of an idea, a phase of maintenance, stability, and growth, and a phase of transformation, and/or destruction, where cycles come to completion so that new ones may begin.
This cyclical principle is also deeply expressed through mythological archetypes of goddesses who embody different aspects of Shakti—the feminine cosmic energy that initiates manifestation. Across various spiritual traditions, we encounter goddesses of creation and fertility, protectors and sustainers of growth, as well as goddesses of war, the underworld, and death—symbolizing the destruction of the old and the creation of space for the new.
The destructive power of Shakti is deeply present in nature and in our collective consciousness, but it has often been suppressed and distorted in patriarchal culture – emerging as the collective “shadow” of the feminine psyche. However, this very transformative energy is what enables regeneration, healing, and evolution. It dismantles what no longer serves in order to give birth to something more authentic and aligned.
In Vedic Astrology, the principle of Shakti is reflected through the nakshatras (lunar mansions). Each nakshatra, according to traditional Vedic astrological texts, carries its own specific Shakti—a unique power or potential that seeks expression through an individual’s cosmic role.
For example, Rohini nakshatra embodies Rohana Shakti—the power of growth, development, and fertility; Jyeshtha nakshatra embodies Arohana Shakti—the power of rising, conquering, and overcoming; while Mula nakshatra embodies Bharana Shakti—the power of destruction, breaking down, and dissolution.
Alongside the Shaktis of the nakshatras and the elemental archetypes—Fire, Earth, Water, Air, and Ether—it is equally important in chart analysis to observe which Guna is most dominant in the natal chart. Just as we can embody multiple elements, we may express more than one Guna, yet often one acts as the primary indicator of our cosmic role.
For instance, if the majority of key planetary placements in a natal chart embody the Guna of creation, the individual will feel a strong creative impulse and drive to initiate. These are visionaries, initiators, and pioneers of ideas, projects, or artistic expressions, guided by an inner urge to create and bring new concepts into the world.
If the dominant Guna is that of preservation, the individual will have a natural affinity for building systems, maintaining stability, protecting, refining, and expanding what already exists. This energy brings organization, structure, analytical thinking, and the capacity for long-term growth and development.
If the Guna of destruction is dominant, the individual will be drawn to deep transformative processes. When this energy is not consciously channeled in alignment with one’s inner nature and cosmic role, it may manifest through conflict or self-destructive patterns. However, when consciously expressed—through one’s vocation, creative work, and, as described in spiritual and occult traditions, deeper inner knowledge—it becomes a powerful force of evolution, healing, and profound transformation.
From the perspective of career, business, and wealth, understanding the dominant Guna in a natal chart can be a significant factor in choosing an aligned professional path, business niche, and the types of services one offers.
Those aligned with the energy of creation thrive in roles that involve bringing something new into existence—whether through art, design, writing, culinary expression, innovation, spiritual or philosophical teachings, or launching businesses and projects. At its highest expression, this energy not only creates but inspires collective innovation.
Those aligned with preservation are naturally suited for roles that support growth, structure, and sustainability—such as consulting, leadership, system development, strategy, protection, law, architecture, operations, and long-term planning.
Those aligned with transformation and destruction play a crucial role in guiding endings and transitions. Their work often involves helping others release what no longer serves, whether through transformation, restructuring, healing work, or facilitating major life or business transitions.
In business, entrepreneurs aligned with creation often excel at launching new ventures. Those aligned with preservation tend to thrive as consultants, leaders, or investors—supporting growth, optimization, and stability. Meanwhile, those aligned with transformation are often skilled in restructuring, guiding exits, and leading businesses through change and reinvention.
Similarly, in coaching or service-based work, the dominant Guna shapes how one supports clients. A creation-oriented coach may focus on helping clients build offers, brands, and new ventures. A preservation-oriented coach may focus on growth, systems, and optimization. A transformation-oriented coach may guide clients through deep change, release, and reinvention.
Aligning your marketing and messaging with your dominant Guna can create a more authentic and resonant connection with your audience. Creation energy speaks through messages of manifestation and new beginnings. Preservation energy communicates growth, stability, and improvement. Transformation energy speaks through change, release, and deep personal evolution.
When we consciously align with our energetic signature—our Guna and Shakti—our professional path, business, and contribution become an extension of our deeper purpose. In practice, a lack of alignment often leads to stagnation in success, financial flow, business growth, or visibility. Conversely, alignment tends to open pathways to prosperity, aligned clients, and meaningful opportunities.
This does not eliminate the need for effort, discipline, or continuous growth. However, much like the archetypal Hero’s Journey, once we gain clarity about our path and take the first steps toward it, support often appears—through mentors, partnerships, resources, synchronistic events, and opportunities.
If you are experiencing stagnation in your career or business, it may be valuable to reflect on whether you are aligned with your natal chart’s indications—your nakshatras, dominant Guna, and elemental balance—and whether you are consciously channeling your inherent Shakti or following external strategies that do not resonate with your true nature.
It is also important to recognize the phase you are currently in. Are you in the phase of creation, driven by inspiration and courage to bring something new to life? In the phase of stability and expansion, requiring systems, strategy, and long-term planning? Or in a phase of transformation, calling for rebranding, restructuring, or the completion of cycles to make space for something new?
Each phase requires different forms of support, actions, clarity, and courage. Strategies that once served you may become limiting as you evolve.
Shakti is an energy that seeks movement, expression, and channeling. When left unexpressed, it may remain dormant or manifest through unconscious patterns. When consciously directed through an authentic mission, it becomes a source of power, manifestation, creativity, and prosperity.
In this sense, the natal chart can be viewed not only as a map of the sky at the moment of birth, but as a symbolic map of our cosmic role, our path to success, and the way we contribute to collective evolution.
